These stone walls are part of the original locks on the Erie Canal at Lockport, NY. They raised the canal 60 feet to conquer the Niagara Escarpment, the last hurdle before Lake Erie. Two parallel sets of five locks each were constructed, one to carry eastbound traffic and one for westbound. One set of these locks still exists as part of the Canal Museum in Lockport. |
